If you follow my blog or work, I know you’ve heard the name Taryn Scalise or ToughLove before. Taryn was put on a mission – to take a few Fashion in Detroit t-shirts (www.fashionindetroit.com) and reconstruct them into something fabulous. Well, as usual, she went above and beyond. Meet our lovely models: Heather, Marley and Heather. Thats right, two Heathers in one day.
Here are a few images to showcase the efforts Taryn put into her designs. The next Fashion in Detroit Runway Fashion Show will occur in March!

The thing I love most about the holidays are being able to spend them with people I love. Unfortunately, I don’t have too many opportunities to visit with grandparents, aunts and uncles thanks to my hectic schedule – so I look forward to this time of year to catch up. That’s exactly what the Carswell family had in mind. On November 28th, a family reunion was hosted at the Fenton Township Community Center and its guest list was around 150. There was a clown painting childrens faces.. 3 Mowtown artists singing.. and one big happy family.
The Carswell’s – Thank you SO much for having me! It was a pleasure!

I need all of your help!
I’m hosting a food drive on Saturday, January 23rd from 1-4pm. We’ll be collecting any non-perishable foods for the Eastern Michigan Food Bank. I need your help in spreading the word and your support by coming to the drive and donating food!
And just to make it worth your while, for every 5 cans/boxes you donate I’ll be giving you a $20 studio credit! Or, exchange that credit for one facebook/myspace headshot!
Spread the love and help me feed the hungry!

I made an announcement on Facebook and Twitter a week or so back.. about how I was in search of deserving families for a special holiday gift. Many submissions were sent to me by friends and kin of those deserving families. Each story melted my heart. The Holidays have always put me in touch with how thankful I am and how lucky I feel – I wanted to let this great feeling rub off on all of you so you could feel the warmth a good deed can create. Giving feels amazing. Take a look around you; lend a hand. Often the gift that someone needs isn’t a monetary gift – but the gift of love, a shoulder to lean on, or just being that person they can talk to.
Here’s what we wanted to present a deserving family with this holiday..
Free Family Portrait Session
Digital Negatives
24 Wallet Prints
Two 8×10 Prints
Three 5×7 Prints
(value $750)
ALSO! My friend Holly Hughes over at JD Michel Salon in Fenton has decided to jump in and offer some of her services as well. She’s agreed to give these lucky families some special treatment before the portrait session! (See what I mean? Giving rubs off!)
The winners will receive a free cut/colorfor the whole family with Holly in at the JD Michel salon in Fenton before the Photoshoot!
Choosing the winners was very difficult as I felt that everyone deserved this great gift! But, we narrowed it down to two. Here are our 2009 winners!
The Stevenson Family!
We have been told a lot of great things about this family. Trevor is 2yrs old and has an unidentified lung disease. His mother has been his rock throughout this trying time and recently lost her job after spending ‘too much’ time in the hospital with her son. There’s a special lung clinic in Seattle that little Trevor needs to attend for specialized treatment but Medicaid wont cover it. Danielle Priebe is the wonderful woman who nominated this deserving family – she is hosting a January benefit to try and raise enough money to send him to the Seattle Clinic! Danielle, if there’s anything I can help you with for the benefit please let me know.
The Nolte Family!
The Nolte family has had their fair share of hardships. Tracy and Jeff have two children, Kristina (13) and Jayden (3). Their story is a hard one to swallow. Tracy and Marvin were high school sweetharts - they got married and gave birth to a precious girl, Kristina. When Kristina was 3, Marvin was unexpectedly taken from them in a motorcycle accident. The year prior to Marvin’s passing, Tracy’s father was murdered in Arizona. After years of healing, Tracy married Marvin’s best friend, Jeff. The two of them had a little boy, Jayden. Just this past year Tracy’s mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Aside from making sure their own family is taken care of, the Nolte family has been making sure Tracy’s mom’s bills and housework is cared for. This family has gone through so much and Christy Deringer nomitated them by saying if she was able to bless one family this holiday – it would be them. I couldnt agree more.
Thanks to everyone who nominated a family! We will have plans to do this again soon! FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER to know when the next gift will be given! www.twitter.com/jenkniivila
I’m sure most of you have heard of Taryn.. she is a great friend of mine and attends many of my photoshoots. It’s pretty likely you have even met her. She is a make-up artist and my go-to girl for inspiration. I highly suggest that if you are a bride-to-be or just looking for a make-up artist for a shoot or other type of event, do yourself a favor and check her out. She is the owner of ToughLove and not only does she make faces pretty but she is also a clothing designer! Jack of all trades.
Isn’t she pretty?

First of all.. THANK YOU to everyone who made it out for my studio grand opening party! It was a hit and I am so gracious of the support you have all shown. I have the most amazing friends, family and clients in the entire world!
I’m WAY behind on my blogging and have decided to combine all my recent mini sessions into one blog post. So – here you have it! This is whats been keeping me so busy.
More to come!
The Andrews Family!
The Sanch Family
Renee
The Holmes Family
The Turkowski Family
Meet this totally gorgeous couple, Victoria and Malachi (and Driver, the dog). They have a June 2010 wedding planned! We met this past Sunday morning in Fenton for their engagement photographs. Not only is this couple adorable, but they were such a pleasure to photograph because the chemistry was so strong between them. Most the time I didn’t need to give them any direction – they were so wrapped up in each other which made every single shot FULL of emotion and love.
Thank you, Victoria and Malachi, for allowing me to document your life, relationship and soon, your wedding. The pleasure was all mine!

Sara and her husband have reserved their baby story package with visual poetry and this past weekend marked their first session.. the beloved maternity session. Maternity photos are a great way to document your child, even before they arrive. Between my maternity session and the 3-4d ultrasound, those two things were by far my MUSTS when I was pregnant with Brooklyn. I think pregnancy is such a beautiful, blessed moment in a couple’s life.
Back to Sara! Baby Mcquade will show her face in February which makes her twenty-something weeks along. Sara owns her own in-home daycare so she is completely prepared to become a mom in a few short months. And, from the look in her eyes and smile, I know she’ll make a great one.

Meet Connor. He’s a 2010 senior over at Kearlsey High in Flint. I met him through his sister Kristy, a recent bride of mine. We met up a few weeks back in Fenton and had fun both in the studio and roaming the town. So… I’m totally convinced that the ‘power tie’ myth is true. The second he put this striped tie on he was a posing machine.. I loved every minute of it! Enjoy!
